Return to the Oil Aid Database Projects financed in non-U.S. currencies have been converted to US$ using Oanda.com on the date of input to the database. The original currency amount is included in each project’s Notes field.
Where the exact project approval date is not available, January 1st of the year is used. Projects proposed but not yet approved show US$0 and are not included in the Total Oil Aid calculations.
Aid to coal projects and the gas power sector is included in the database, but not in the Total Oil Aid calculations.
For a full explanation of our methodology and definition of oil aid, see the report, Aiding Oil, Harming the Climate, available here.
Because of a lack of transparency in international financial institutions and export credit agencies, information is likely to be incomplete.
Additional research is very likely to reveal additional subsidies of the oil and gas industry. The database will be updated as new information becomes available.
This research was compiled by Oil Change International with data and input from Bank Information Center, Bretton Woods Project, CEE Bankwatch, Friends of the Earth US, Sustainable Energy and Economy Network and Friends of the Earth Japan.
